So let me guess. You went out and bought some crown molding from your local hardware store and can't outline out how to cut the corners. Am I right?

1. Mitering the corners at a 45 degree angle and assuming it will fit.
a. Crown Molding is not laid flat against the wall. It is easily angled when it is installed. Because of this it will not line up at a 45 degree angle.

2. Assuming there is only one angle needed at each miter cut.
a. Not only do you need to turn the horizontal angle of the blade but you will also need to turn the vertical angle. Depending on the type of saw you have will decree either you can do this or not. Most compound miter saws have this capability now, any way if you have an older saw you may not have this feature.

3. Using a hammer.
a. I know this one seems a microscopic strange so let me explain. I am writing this record for the beginner woodworker. So I am also assuming you don't have Tons of taste do this type of work. Like we talked about before crown molding is very expensive. It's also not the most durable wood. It's very thin and flimsy. Using a hammer without having a lot of taste will originate divots in the molding. These cannot be fixed. That's right you will have to buy yet someone else piece of wood.

4. Knowing where to place your nails on the wood.
a. There are only a few places to nail that will not crack the molding. What you need to keep in mind is this board is at an angle. If you shoot a nail in the middle of the board you will crack it if not break it. The best places to place your nails are at the top and bottom.
